Day 18

Joanna Maternity Suite May 2015

It’s Day 18! Joanna is in her Maternity Suite. Man constructed the Box Suite and put it on the South Coop floor. Because we thought Joanna might not take kindly to being moved, we waited until after dark.

We put the incubator eggs in the Maternity Suite, and then moved Joanna. We were surprised to find two eggs tucked under her wings in her ‘armpit’ area. Evidently she was giving them a little extra warmth. We candled her eggs and then placed them close to her. She was not interested in anyone trying to touch the eggs that we had put in the nest earlier. After we finished, she rearranged all the eggs so they were under her. Can you tell she is sitting on fourteen eggs? It’s amazing how spread out she is and how much she has fluffed her feathers.

Chicken eggs on average hatch on Day 21. We’ll be listening for peeps!
