Granny Smith’s Apples

pie Dec 2014

When my dad was a kid, his mother married Mr. Smith, a railroad engineer. Grandma made wonderful pies. Grandpa Smith’s favorite dessert was a piece of Grandma’s apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Grandpa Smith loved the apple pie with cheddar she frequently packed in his lunch pail. He said her pies were famous in three states. Whenever I heard someone speak of Granny Smith apples, I thought they were talking about the apples Grandma Smith baked in her famous pies.

I still think of those tart green apples as Granny Smith’s. Now I’m the Grandma baking a pie with Granny Smith’s apples.  My apple pie is famous in at least one state. I thought of Grandpa. He would have gone to the store for some cheddar cheese.
